New Digital Nomad Visa: Thailand’s Plan to Boost Tourism

Thailand’s government has introduced a new digital nomad visa, hoping the strategy can boost the country’s tourism industry. The Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) allows foreign digital nomads, freelancers, and remote workers to temporarily stay in Thailand for up to 180 days per visit, on a multiple-entry basis, within five years.

The DTV category offers a more accessible immigration route for remote workers in Thailand, compared to the separate remote work option available under the Long-Term Resident Visa. The latter has stricter requirements, such as higher minimum income thresholds, potential educational qualifications, and specific criteria related to the foreign employer’s status, among other conditions.

Thailand’s tourism industry is a cornerstone of the nation’s economy, playing a significant role in its GDP. Known for its vibrant culture, stunning landscapes, and rich history, Thailand attracts millions of international visitors each year. Tourism accounts for approximately 12-20 percent of the country’s GDP, making it one of the most vital sectors.

Thailand welcomed 17.5 million foreign tourists in the first half of this year, an increase of 35 percent from the same period last year.

Who is eligible for the Destination Thailand Visa?

In addition to digital nomads, remote workers, and freelancers, the DTV is also available for participants in the following activities:

  • Thai cooking classes;
  • Seminars;
  • Music festivals;
  • Muay Thai courses;
  • Sports training; and
  • Medical treatment.

What are the requirements?

  1. Interested applicants must be at least 20 years of age;
  2. Must have evidence of savings of at least 500,000 baht (US$14,197) for at least three months;
  3. A foreign employment contract, hospital/medical center appointment letter, or a letter of acceptance from institute or company organizing activities; and
  4. A professional portfolio.

The DTV holder can sponsor a spouse and dependent children. The applicant must submit proof of relationship to the DTV holder such as marriage and birth certificates.

Visa fee

The visa fee is 10,000 baht (US$284)

The introduction of the Destination Thailand Visa marks a strategic effort by the Thai government to attract a new wave of visitors, particularly those who contribute to the economy in diverse ways, from digital work to cultural experiences. As Thailand’s tourism industry continues to recover and grow, initiatives like the DTV are poised to play a crucial role in sustaining this momentum, ensuring that the sector remains a vital contributor to the nation’s GDP.
